The debate over anti-trans “bathroom bills” is in fact resulting in men going into women’s restrooms–just not who you think. In an attempt to prove the inherent vulnerability of public restrooms, conservative men are going into the  women’s bathroom at Target and potentially other retailers.

Sandy Rios of the American Family Association had this to say:

I think there’s no question that when you say that there are no barriers in the bathroom and that if men or women feel like they are men or women, the [opposite] of however they are equipped, and you have no restrictions, the net effect will be that people will not be stopped. We’ve already had people testing this, going into Targets and men trying to go into bathrooms. There is absolutely no barrier.

Of course none of this proves that the perported problem actually exists, but it does create a new one.

Transgender individuals aren’t likely to be noticed in public bathrooms because these are rooms set up to provide enough privacy that wandering eyes don’t catch a glimpse of fellow bathroom-goers’ genitalia. But now conservatives with an irrational fear of prying eyes are themselves becoming their own worst fears.
